ATLANTA -

The lone finalist for Atlanta Public Schools' next superintendent made the rounds on Saturday.

Officials announced Thursday that Texas educator, Dr. Meria Carstarphen has been chosen to serve as the district's next superintendent. Carstarphen, originally of Selma, Ala., serves as superintendent of the Austin Independent School District.

In a statement, Atlanta Board of Education officials said graduation rates in Austin increased to an all-time high of 82.5 percent, SAT and ACT exam scores increased, and college application rates increased to an all-time high of 92 percent under Carstarphen's tenure.

In a statement, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed called Carstarphen a proven visionary leader, and said he'd do everything in his power to support her.

Interim Superintendent Erroll Davis' contract ends June 30.
