Mets Opening Day

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - It was off to a rainy and snowy start for Major League Baseball's Opening Day at Citi Field, but the skies cleared in time for the NY Mets to take on the Washington Nationals on Monday.

Anthony Rendon hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning and drove in a career-high four runs, twice rallying the Nationals against the Mets' suspect bullpen for an opening-day victory.

It was windy in Flushing, Queens with temperatures in the low 40s.

New to the lineup was Curtis Granderson who played four years with the NY Yankees and Bartolo Colon who went 18-6 last season with Oakland.

But the line up is not entirely what the Mets had in mind.

Second baseman Daniel Murphy was in Florida awaiting the birth of his first child, and new outfielder Chris Young was sitting out because of a mild right quadriceps strain.

Eric Young Jr. moved from left field to second base to replace Murphy, who played 161 games last season. Juan Lagares was starting in center field and Andrew Brown in left.

Chris Young said he tweaked his quad running out a grounder in his final spring training at-bat last weekend against the Toronto Blue Jays in Montreal. After an off day Tuesday, he was expected to be in the lineup Wednesday night.

General manager Sandy Alderson says Murphy also is expected back for Wednesday's game.

It was the 10th opening day for team captain David Wright.

“It’s hard to pat yourself on the back for the good things you did .. there is always that pessimistic side of me that says I need to do this better," said Wright.

A video tribute to Hall of Famer and longtime Mets broadcaster Ralph Kiner played before the game.

Mayor Bill de Blasio tossed out the ceremonial first pitch. Fans booed him.

The other team in town, the NY Yankees, play their first home game of the 2014 season next Monday.
