Sarah White, who presides over the Association Of Personal Historians, has taught several obituary writing classes and is now taking a preference and interest in the concept of the "Selfie Obituary."
The idea of self-absorption is nothing new, especially since the word "selfie" is now included in modern dictionaries to describe self-portraits. The Selfie Obituary takes the concept to a new level, suggesting that folks write up their own obituaries so their family doesn't have to.
It isn't unfamiliar, as some people have already done so out of amusement, but White suggests that the trending idea has a lot to do with the baby boomer generation's need to have valid legacy and be remembered accurately after their passing.
Philadelphia-born James Robert Rebhorn wrote his own obituary and had it published on his church's website alongside funeral arrangements after his death on March 24, 2014.
