PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - A man who shot a javelina in his Prescott yard has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.

The Daily Courier reports that 64-year-old Douglas Newbold pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful discharge of a firearm in city limits and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Yavapai County Superior Court Judge Tina Ainley said she would designate the charges as misdemeanors.

Ainley sentenced Newbold to pay a $750 fine plus an 83 percent surcharge and to perform 40 hours of community service.

Newbold originally was charged with several felonies and a misdemeanor.

He killed the javelina boar with a shotgun in his front yard near the Prescott rodeo grounds in March 2013.

He told the Courier last year that he shot the animal because it came at him and he felt threatened.
