Homeland Security chief speaks to NYPD about dangers

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

During a counterterrorism meeting at NYPD headquarters Wednesday, the head of America's Department of Homeland Cecurity said Syria has become a potential threat. Jeh Johnson said Al Qaeda supporters from America who fight in Syria's civil war may come home as trained, connected threats.

For now the chief concern remains a lone wolf terrorist like Faisal Shazad, who tried to bomb Times Square. The main target remains New York City and the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, especially the new 1 World Trade Center, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said. Following recent security breaches there and the new memorial museum, New Yorkers can expect more officers.

Following President Obama's declaration that compared to Russian threats, he was more concerned about a nuclear bomb going off in Manhattan, talks are underway to restore millions of dollars in radiation detectors cut by Homeland Security.

Another security concern is the federal courthouse by Chinatown, where Al Qaeda operative Abu Hamza al Masri goes on trial during Passover.

Bratton did say that there is no known specific terrorist threat to New York City and if there is one will be able to ramp up quickly to deal with it.
