County Attorney speaks out on mom who left kids in hot car

Posted: Updated:

A valley mom facing charges of child abuse after police say she left her two kids; a six month old and a two year old in a hot car while she went on a job interview.

People across the country rallying behind her, but today the county attorney said that facts, not emotion will decide how to proceed in this case.

This story has taken off since it happened on March 20th.

For the first time we are hearing the 911 call from the day Shanesha Taylor was arrested.. For leaving her two kids in the car while, she went in for a job interview.

911 operator: "ok what's the emergency?".
Caller: "there's a baby in a car by itself at my work, and it's like 3 to 4 months old, they have the window maybe an inch down, he's crying poor baby".

Today Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery talked about the case.

"The six month old was wearing two different shirts and had a blanket on him too and was sweating profusely. And they appeared to the officer that responded that they were in need of immediate attention," said Montgomery.

A website set up to raise money for Taylor has raised tens of thousand dollars, and Montgomery says his office has been swamped with emails and phone calls from people supporting Shanesha Taylor.

"I respect the fact that people want to be heard on what they think should occur in this case but I'll point out that not a single communication that's come into this office as of yet has mentioned at all the position those two young children were put in. Everything is focused on the mother," said Montgomery.

Darlene Newsom is CEO of Umom New Day Center, a place for homeless and single moms to turn for help. She's not surprised by the outpouring of support for Taylor.

"I think that people care for people who are trying to provide for themselves. And obviously this woman wanted not to be homeless, wanted to be employed, and wanted to provide for her family," said Newsom.
