Downey, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A fire damaged a commercial office building in Downey today and prompted the closure of a city street, police said.

The fire was reported early this morning at Paramount Boulevard and Fifth Street, the Downey Police Department reported. Paramount Boulevard was closed between Fifth and Sixth streets, police said.

Neighbors said they heard an explosion just before the fire broke out, news media outlets reported. The station later reported there was evidence of a natural gas leak at the scene.

Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department were sent to assist Downey firefighters in the battle to extinguish the flames, the county fire department reported.

The businesses in the building included tax services, medical supplies and a doctor's office, a news videographer reported from the scene.
