Young boy hit by car out of hospital, beaten driver remains in coma

DETROIT (WJBK) - Police are continuing the investigation of the beating of a man who stopped to help a young boy he had just accidentally hit with his car.

Police say at about 4:10 p.m. Wednesday an 10-year-old boy was walking along a sidewalk near Morang Drive and Balfour Road on Detroit's northeast side when he stepped off the curb into the path of an oncoming vehicle and was hit.

The driver stopped immediately, got out of his vehicle and was then attacked and severely beaten for about five minutes by 10-12 witnesses.

"They just started punching him and stuff like that. The guy was trying to fight back - he was trying to fight back - but there was too many of them so, eventually, he just failed," says Desmond Key, the uncle of the boy.

The driver's wallet and other belongings were also stolen and he was left unconscious at the scene, police say.

Both the boy and the driver were taken to the hospital after the group of suspects took off. Police say the suspects are not known in the neighborhood and appear to be teenagers.

Reports stated the father of the boy hit by the car was involved in the beating. Police say the father is in custody but for unrelated charges.

The boy is out of the hospital. He has been identified as David Harris. He suffered a fracture to his leg.

The driver, whom police have identified as 54-year-old Steven Utash, is still in the hospital. His son tells FOX 2's Erika Erickson Utash is in an induced coma.

Editor's Note: Police had initially said the boy was 11 years old, but family tells FOX 2 he is 10 years old.

    48-year-old Keith Andersen retired in February from the Grosse Pointe Park Police Department. On June 21, he was involved in a roll over accident where he suffered a broken neck. As of now Keith has no movement in his the lower half of his body. The Fraternal Order of Police, Grosse Pointe Lodge 102 is holding a fundraiser for Keith on Aug 5th.
