West Village restaurant serves up emu eggs

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Emus, birds native to Australia and similar to ostriches but smaller, lay very large eggs.

At a restaurant in the West Village, you can eat a scrambled emu egg dish for about $90.

Louro on West 10th St. serves up the eggs. It's chef describes them as "super rich."

"We have a whole specialty egg thing going. One of my friends is a purveyor and offered me emu eggs," said Chef David Santos.

The restaurant has been in business for a little over a year and the soft scramble with wild mushrooms and black truffle is a popular item.

The egg looks like an avocado with a hard, thick shell.. To get the equally large yolk out,  Santos cracks it like he would a regular egg.

While the emu is native to Australia, they are also raised on farms in New Jersey. The emu eggs used at Louro come from the Garden State.
