WESTLAND, Mich. (WJBK) - UPDATE: (Saturday 4/5/2014) The Westland Police Department has made arrests of the three subjects involved in the April 3rd assault and battery against army veteran Adam Wagner. The Westland Police Department would like to thank the public for their assistance in identifying these three subjects. Both tips from the public and a thorough police investigation by detectives resulted in their capture. The Westland Police Department will be forwarding a warrant recommendation to the Wayne County Prosecutors Office to determine criminal charges. This is still an ongoing investigation.  At this point in time the identities of the three subjects will not be released.

The incident began around 2 a.m. April 3 outside a 7-11 on South Venoy Road when a group of men noticed Adam Wagner's military ID, which apparently prompted them to start making derogatory comments to him about the U.S. Military.

"They were saying, 'How can you be in the military when they let black people in the military?' They used the 'n word', saying [he] was an 'n-word' lover," says girlfriend Angela Deguise.

"I took pretty, pretty good offense to that because my best friend in the army was black. He saved my life," says Wagner.

Wagner says that's when the suspects started attacking him by punching and kicking him, and then ran away on foot.

Wagner was yelling for help but was without a cell phone. He says the men backed off for a moment, but continued the attack again.

"I got to ground and I went straight to the fetal position, covering my ear drums and as much as I could of my face," remembers Wagner.

After, he says even though his eyes were swollen shut he was able to drag himself and get help from a neighbor, who called police.

Police say he was taken to the hospital and was treated for a broken nose, head injuries and lacerations to the face and mouth.

Police are reviewing surveillance tape hoping to identify the suspects. They are described as three white men with shaved heads in their 20s. They may have been intoxicated.

If you recognize them police ask you speak up by calling the Westland Police Department at (734) 722-9600 or the Westland Police Detective Bureau at (734) 721-6311.
