Beetles take over Buckeye neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
BUCKEYE, Ariz. -

From afar, it looks like not much is happening in this Buckeye neighborhood, but just look down.

"There's a billion of them," said Chuck Mapes.

Look up.

"They are all over our roof," said Angelica Matuz.

Look around.

"Our walls.."

These guys are everywhere!  Well, almost.

"Not inside the house yet. As soon as we invite them, I'm sure they will," said Mapes.

The little beetles started popping up a few days ago and day by day, they seem to be multiplying.  They've taken over the sidewalks and they haven't stopped.

"They are getting in the garage.  They are all over the backyard and front yard," said Juan Matuz.

"We're new to Arizona, so we're getting the feel to what's going on.  Went through my first mini-Haboob the other day and now we have these bugs.  I don't know if this is normal, but I don't like it."

"You get all itchy and you feel like they are crawling on you."

"They start crawling on your sandals. It's uh, creepy."

An exterminator says they are Box Elder beetles.

"This is what you're looking at.  You have your common red and black ones, which is what I've mostly seen, but this is what we're looking at right here."

Whatever they are, everyone here just wants them gone.

"We've never seen this before."

"They seem to like our neighborhood really well."

The good news is they don't appear to bite, but they are certainly not something you want around.
