Authorities increase patrol in Tempe to fight underage drinking

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. -

Officers from around the valley are out in full force to crack down on underage drinkers this weekend.

During the three-day crackdown, Tempe Police say they made 155 arrests on Friday night, with 30 of those suspects facing charges of drinking under the influence.

The enforcement is happening just a week after an 18-year-old ASU student fell 10 stories to her death after getting drunk at a frat party.

Naomi McLendon, an ASU student from Kansas, was at an unofficial, all-you-can-drink frat party before she fell from the 10th floor of a Tempe high-rise building early Sunday.

Surveillance video showed McLendon stumbling into the building. She was alone on the balcony when she put her leg over the rail.

Tempe police said they will have increased patrols this weekend near campus from Broadway to University and McClintock to Mill Avenue.

Officers from ASU, Chandler, Gilbert and Mesa police departments, DPS and Maricopa County Sheriff's office will be assisting Tempe police on underage drinking and DUI enforcement.

About 50 officers were added to the area.

On Friday night, nearly 30 people received DUI's and 70 people under 21 were cited for intoxication.
