Authorities are investigating the discovery of human remains in the desert near Apache Lake.

Three men who went target shooting Sunday found the remains in a large plastic container say the container was taped shut and stashed deep inside a bush.

When the men opened it, they were shocked to discover the skeletal remains and clothing of what they say appears to be a young person.

The men immediately notified the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the scene and confirmed Monday that it's being investigated as a homicide.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio commented on the case Monday afternoon.

"We're going to investigate.  I have full confidence in my homicide detectives and I hope that they identify the person and see if it's connected to a missing person or a homicide. We have work to.. do most of our homicides are out in the desert, sometimes very difficult to solve these homicides, because it's old, but we do pretty good, we're good experts on investigating bodies found in desert."

They say the county medical examiner will try to identify the remains and determine if this was a child or an adult and possibly how the person died.

On Wednesday, MCSO Lt. Brandon Jones stated that remains had been identified as Jenika Feuerstein, born Sept. 24, 1988.  She had been missing since 2009.
