Tropical storms expected to target US coast in 2014

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A forecast for the 2014 hurricane season predicts much-less than normal tropical activity this year but tropical storms forming closer to the United States.

“The very warm water off of the Eastern Seaboard is a huge problem," chief forecaster Joe Bastardi said.

WeatherBell Analytics anticipates a total of 8-10 named storms, with 3-5 hurricanes and 1-2 major hurricanes.

It expected that the deep tropics will have less to much-less than normal activity this year but very warm water off of the Eastern Seaboard is a concern, along with the oncoming El Niño conditions.

“We think this a challenging year," chief forecaster Joe Bastardi said. "One that we think has the greatest threat of higher intensity in closer to the coast, and where like 2012, warnings may be issued with the first official NHC (National Hurricane Center) advisory.”

There have been plenty of El Niño years with high impact seasons for the U.S. coast, including 1957, 1965, 1969, 1976, 1983, 1991, 1992, 2002, and 2004.

Its meteorologists say the pattern favors stronger storms in-close to the U.S. rather than in the deep tropics.

WeatherBell says that there has been a lack of activity near the East Coast over the last 20 years. While Irene and Sandy have drawn significant attention, they were nothing compared to the meteorological mayhem of the 1950s or the intensity of 1938 and 1944.

It's forecasters say there is nothing to prohibit another Sandy-type hit on the East Coast despite a relatively low number of named storms that are expected.

The 2013 Hurricane season featured below normal tropical activity in the Atlantic, featuring 14 total storms, 2 hurricanes, and no major hurricanes.
