Local school reacts to Pittsburgh stabbing

Posted: Updated:

While police in Pennsylvania sort through the details of a school stabbing, an Atlanta-area school is taking a hard look at how to ensure students' safety.

DeKalb County teachers spoke to FOX 5 Wednesday. They said any time a tragedy like this happens, they end up re-evaluating their own procedures. They said it's a learning experience, and what happened in Pittsburgh on Wednesday is a harsh reminder of the age in which we live - a time when school violence seems to be happening more and more.

DeKalb School Board Chair Dr. Melvin Johnson said Wednesday's stabbing spree in Pittsburgh is a reminder that no safety plan is perfect.

Johnson said when DeKalb schools return from spring break next week, he will meet with district leaders to re-evaluate their procedures.

Districts all across Georgia including Gwinnett, Forsyth and Atlanta city schools outline their own safety plans online. These plans tend to include monthly drills, so everyone knows how to react in the event of an emergency.

Other systems like Gainesville city schools have armed some of their school resource officers with high powered rifles for use in an emergency. Some parents wonder how much is too much.
