Dog Summoned For Jury Duty In New Jersey

Posted: Updated:
BRIDGETON, N.J. -

You've heard of dogs being used to fight crime, but a mistake made at a South Jersey courthouse almost took K-9 justice to a new level.

IV looks like your typical German Shepherd.

"Her favorite thing is ball," Barret Griner IV said.

But something pretty unusual happened to the 80-pound canine recently.

A summons for jury duty mailed to her owner was actually addressed to her.

"It's kind of comical, you know. To see the actual notice with her name on it. It's pretty funny," Griner said.

Officials at the Cumberland County Courthouse wouldn't comment, but Griner thinks the Roman numerals in his name are partially to blame.

"Somehow there was a mix up with the computer, there's a glitch in the code that didn't read the name correctly and spit out IV Griner, which just happened to be my dog's name," he said.

And while she might have the energy for a long trial, one Bridgeton resident said the jury is still out on how much she would contribute to a verdict.

"If you ever served on a jury, that might be the most intelligent one of the 12 people that were called," Robert Felmey said.

"So what kind of juror do you think the dog would make?" Fox 29's Drew Dickman asked.

"It would be very ruff when it comes down to the penalty stage," Felmey said.

IV isn't Griner's only dog, but he doesn't think his other canine will get called in for court anytime soon.

"That would be slim to none. You got a better chance of being eaten by a polar bear and a black bear at the same time on that one," he said.

Griner has not contacted the court yet, but believes the summons will eventually be for him.

He doesn't expect to last long at jury selection though because of all the publicity.
