Local Runners Head To The Boston Marathon

Posted: Updated:

If you know someone who is an avid runner; you know it's much more than just exercise. For many it is a way of life.

However, for some local runners who were in Boston one year ago today that way of life has a new meaning.

Listen to what local runners with the Bryn Mawr Running Club had to say when they sat down with Fox 29's Chris O'Connell.

Last year, Yoshiko Jo from Swarthmore, just crossed the finish line minutes before the first bomb went off.

On Monday, she'll run her 10th Boston Marathon alongside fellow area runners now finishing their training.

Some are first timers, some veterans, all of them will be running with heavy hearts and a new inspiration.

Bill Ling says it was all about beating his personal time before, but this year he'll just simply just enjoy the run.

"It made me realize running isn't just about performing real well. It's about the community," Ling said.

This will be Dave Ferguson's first Boston Marathon. He didn't start running until a couple years ago, however, he's preparing for a rollercoaster of emotions.

They all run for different reasons, at different levels, but now are connected by the will to overcome a tragedy.

"To come together, and just support each other, and you just think of all those innocent people that were hurt, and you just want to go and show the world you are stronger than what happened," runner Jennifer McDonnell said.

These locals will be among the 36,000 runners that will start the 118th Boston Marathon Monday morning. All of them say it will be a marathon like no other.
