Belgian artist Baloji kicks off tour in New York

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

To say the 6 feet 5 inch Baloji has a presence would be an understatement. The Belgian artist commands the stage with his mix of hip hop, funk, and rap. The 34-year-old rocked out Webster Hall back in January. Now he's back in New York City kicking off a month-long tour.

"It's one of the most inspiring cities on Earth so it's always great to be here," Baloji says.

Baloji was born in the Congo, but moved to Belgium when he was three. He started writing about those experiences and developed a passion for poetry.

"That was my first thing poetry then I started with hip hop and that led me to other music," he says.

Artists like Bob James and Jay Z and even some Jamaican influences have shaped Baloji's eclectic style, which is being heard around the world.

"Normally French music is restricted for French countries which doesn't mean much but Africa, France, Canada, the fact we play in South America, U.S., Asia, just a great feeling," he says. "I try with my latest album, mixing some traditional Congolese music with something more up to date."

In the new album, he touches on personal subjects like family and politics. Some of the songs are part of the line-up for the tour, which also includes stops in North Carolina, Miami, and Mexico.

"We play this show 200 times," he says. "Even if you have 100 people you just have to give yourself 100 percent."

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
