My Banged Up Birthday

Posted: Updated:

It was supposed to be a day of celebration.  Instead, my birthday turned into a nightmare on the road, thanks to a man who was texting and driving.

My Wednesday morning started off great with some good old fashioned birthday fun on Good Day LA.  After work I was looking forward to picking up one of my closest friends from LAX, flying in for a celebratory weekend.  So, here I am heading east on the 10, making my way to the 405 south overpass.  Per usual, it's stop and go traffic.  As I stopped during one of those moments, I looked in my rear view mirror and saw what you never want to see: a car coming at full speed, with zero intention of braking.  And, just like that, the horrific sound of crushing metal.  The toxic smell of a smoking car and deployed airbags.  The taste of blood.  It all happened so fast.

Turns out, the driver who slammed into me had just received a text so rather than watching the road, he was tending to his phone.  What's worse is he had a baby in the car.  As far as I know, he and his passengers are ok.

Like my car, I'm sure his is totaled.  But this isn't about the vehicles involved (I crashed into a SUV).  This is about the dangers of distracted driving.  April, in fact, is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.  I know we've all heard it countless times, but all it takes is a split second for a life to be lost.  In 2012 alone, 3,328 people were killed in distracted driving crashes.  No text is worth dying for.

I'm so grateful that other than a cut lip, sprained thumb, and rattled nerves, I'm doing just fine.  However, I could do without being another year older.  Oh well. Moral of this story: DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE.  And, on the bright side, at least I get a new car for my birthday.
