'We Support Coach Black of Samohi' That Was Reinstated

Posted: Updated:

Coach Mark Black is going back to school on Monday! He is being reinstated according to Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District Superintendent Sandra Lyon. Black is the coach/biology teacher seen on video in the a classroom fight with a student.

Says the Superintendent, "Based on what we have learned, it is appropriate to return Mr. Black from paid administrative leave... I want to make it very clear that Mark Black was not fired or suspended from his job, he was simply placed on leave with pay during the investigation."

We have been following this story since it broke. It was back on April 4th that a fight broke out in a Santa Monica High School...

That's a huge reversal from her first comments which many called a "rush to judgement." Quoting her from April 4th "(it is) utterly alarming and the physical restraint used by the teacher is unacceptable." The coach was put on paid administrative leave, but almost immediately there was a social media backlash.

Thousands took the coaches side on Facebook. And, thousands more signed a petition on change.org to have the coach reinstated. When two students were arrested and one was charged with assault, the support grew even more. Earlier today there were over 23,000 LIKES on a facebook page called "We Support Coach Black of Samohi." There were 157,000 names on a change.org petition requesting reinstatement.

On Facebook there are lots of reactions congratulating the coach and saying reinstatement was the right decision.

We did reach out to the family of the student that was arrested in the case. We have not gotten a response. Meanwhile, when school starts back up on Monday after Spring Break ... the coach will be back at work.
