Two Men Arrested For Stabbing Two Nurses At Local Hospitals

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA - (FOX 11 / CNS) Two men were in custody Monday for allegedly stabbing two nurses in separate attacks at medical facilities in Sylmar and Torrance over the weekend, authorities said.

The first attack occurred at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center at 14445 Olive View Drive in Sylmar shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, said sheriff's Lt. Denise Stephenson. A man -- later identified as 26-year-old Romero Carnailla -- bypassed the weapons screening area at the hospital's entrance, ran from security guards, and disappeared into the facility, Stephenson said.

As authorities searched the hospital, they heard a woman scream and then found a female nurse with stab wounds to her upper and lower torso, Stephenson said.

Authorities arrested Carnailla, who was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He was held on $55,000 bail, and he was treated at a hospital for an unspecified reason. A knife was recovered. No information was available on a court date.

The victim was hospitalized in critical condition. Her name was not released. The second attack occurred at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in the 1000 block of West Carson Street in Torrance about 9:20 a.m. Sunday, said sheriff's Lt. Rich Burgoyne.

A nurse suffered injuries that were not life-threatening when a man stabbed her in the ear with what was believed to have been pencil, Burgoyne said.

The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Santee resident Thomas Robert Fredette, entered the hospital after clearing a weapons screening area, Burgoyne said.

Fredette came across a group of nurses, grabbed one of them from behind and stabbed her in the ear with a sharp object, Burgoyne said.

The nurse was able to free herself, and she helped deputies locate the suspect, who was taken into custody at the scene, Burgoyne said. A pencil, believed to be have been the weapon, was recovered as evidence, Burgoyne said. Fredette was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, and was held on $130,000 bail. He is due to appear at the Torrance courthouse on Tuesday.
