Mariel Hemingway: 'Running From Crazy'

Posted: Updated:

Talk about being honest…Mariel Hemingway offers up a brutally honest look at the legacy of the Hemingway Family in her new documentary “Running From Crazy”. In it the stunning actress looks at the history of suicides in her famous family. There have been 7 suicides, from her grandfather literary giant Ernest Hemingway to her troubled sister Margaux. And then there’s her oldest sister Joan “muffet” Hemingway who is bipolar.

I watched the film last night and found it to be not only powerful and tearful, but also inspirational. Mariel told us she wants people to be able to talk about the issue of mental illness and suicide awareness out in the open, to get it out of the darkness.

The documentary combines footage shot specifically for the project with vintage photos and film of her very famous family. Also there’s footage from a documentary her late sister Margaux had shot retracing their famous grandfathers steps through Spain.

It’s a rare glimpse inside a dysfunctional family (who’s isn’t right) and hopefully people who watch it can take away some hope. Mariel told us she’s very aware of that family history and she’s tried to keep her life on track with a very healthy grounded lifestyle. Not an easy task for the girl who was in a Woody Allen movie when she was 16!

It’s sweet to see Mariel with her own daughters talking about their families legacy and how they are forging their own path (both girls are of course stunning and following in mom’s footsteps).

You can watch “Running From Crazy” this Sunday, April 27th at 9pm on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN.
