Public Works Commissioners Approve a Contested Cell Tower

Posted: Updated:
Dozens of people, in a packed West Covina City Council chambers raised their hands when asked who was opposed to Verizon Wireless building a cell tower in their neighborhood. The tower would be 60 feet tall and dressed to look like a eucalyptus tree. The location is near two schools, high priced homes and on South Hills Country Club's golf course.

a number of homeowners want no part of it. They went to a West Covina Public Works Commission hearing and made it clear they were worried about their health and property value, but because the Federal Telecommunications Law of 1996 states a local jurisdiction can not deny a company from constructing a cell phone tower based on issues relating to health or radio frequency signals the three commissioners voted in favor of approving the site.

Those in opposition say they will appeal.
