PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A star Arizona Cardinals Football player is sentenced to one year probation. The punishment handed down to Daryl Washington after he pled guilty to assaulting his ex girlfriend and breaking her collarbone.

Daryl Washington apologized to his ex girlfriend in court today. Prosecutors were asking for three years probation but in the end a judge sentenced him to a year probation.

"I'm very remorseful for this incident, and I will do everything in my power to make sure that I fulfill my probation and that I will be a better person and a better role," said Washington in court.

Daryl Washington vowed to do better just before being sentenced him to a year probation.

"I just wanted to apologize for everything that has happened up to this point obviously for the victim I want to apologize to her and her family and my family as well for causing both parties pain," he said.

Last year, police said Washington got into a child custody fight with his ex girlfriend. Police say Washington choked her and broke her collar bone. His ex was not in court today. But Washington's wife was. She asked the judge for leniency.

"He's very loving very kind he's very responsible he's just a good person," said Khanesia Washington.

"I just know from this point on that ill be more responsible even more responsible with myself," said Daryl Washington.

Washington's attorney asked the judge to make his assault charge a misdemeanor instead of a felony saying a felony conviction would hurt his NFL career.

"It's different for Mr. Washington, Mr. Washington as everyone is aware is a Cardinal's player, he's part of the NFL and for that reason there are rules that are different for everyone else," said Phil Noland.

In the end judge, Scott McCoy denied their request saying he can only treat Washington just like he treats everyone else.

It's a felony assault conviction for now but the judge says if Washington follows his probation terms for six months, he'll consider changing it to a misdemeanor
