Cough syrup popular in celebrities' 'sizzurp' cocktails pulled from market

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A prescription cough syrup that some celebrities like to mix with soda and hard candy is being pulled from the market,  pharmaceutical company Actavis confirmed.

The cough syrup-soda concoction is often called "sizzurp." Lil Wayne sings about "Me and my drink." Bieber reportedly loves it. Soulja Boy recently posted a photo of several bottles of the Actavis-branded syrup on his Instagram account.

Actavis, one company that makes a cough syrup containing codeine, says it is making the "bold and unprecedented decision" to stop selling it because of how celebrities have glamorized its recreational use.

Actavis lamented the "significant attention in the media and elsewhere for its illegal recreational abuse," David Belian, the director of global media relations, said in a statement. "This attention has glamorized the unlawful and dangerous use of the product, which is contrary to its approved indication. This attention may place consumers at risk by minimizing the dangers of its misuse and abuse."

The problem is, Actavis is just one of several drug makers that produces cough syrup containing codeine, a powerful narcotic, so sizzurp use among celebrities and young people who emulate them will likely continue.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
