Fatal Shooting Near Widener University Prompts Campus Alert

Posted: Updated:
A report of a deadly shooting Thursday morning just off Widener University's campus led to an alert urging school community members to "please remain indoors until further notice," but police have now given the all-clear.

The deadly shooting was reported at 12th Street and Melrose Avenue, which is on the opposite side of Interstate 95 from Widener's campus.

The shooting did not involve people on campus, and as a precaution only the university ordered the "shelter in place" alert at 11:01 a.m., a university spokesman said.

The spokesman said that order was lifted at 11:27 a.m. At that time, the university tweeted, "Chester Police have informed Widener that the shooting occurred off campus & that there is no threat. Return to normal operations."

Chester police are continuing to investigate the shooting, university officials said.
