PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Otro Cafe's Inca Salad is a symphony of fresh vegetables, grains, and herbs. The bright note for many is the zing at the end, a generous spritz of lime.

"We use limes in 70 percent of our dishes," said Chef Vince Mellody.

Otro specializes in Mexican food and is feeling the squeeze of a lime crop seriously damaged by weather and crop disease in Mexico. The cost of the limes has more than tripled according to Chef Vince Mellody.

"A case like this use to cost mid 30's, now it's over a hundred dollars," said Mellody.

To make matters worse, Chef Mellody says the limes; they are getting kind of puny. They're only getting half the juice out of them as they normally would.

"If you leave them at room temperature or roll them, that'll help a little bit, but that will only go so far," he said.

Mellody says they will not raise menu prices and won't compromise qualify of dishes, but they are adjusting.

Now you will get lime wedges for your taco if you ask and it's no longer used just as a garnish.

Diners FOX10 spoke with were understanding, they've seen the lime prices at the grocery store. Many said they would pay the price for a taste of lime in their food and drinks.

"Yes, especially in a margarita and especially in tacos the fish tacos you've got to have lime juice in it," said one patron.
