BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - As students are being challenged by new Common Core learning standards, supporters say it's only right that the bar on teachers also should be raised.

Seven states now require would-be teachers to pass state-approved performance assessments for graduation or accreditation, following calls by organizations including the American Federation of Teachers and Council of Chief State School Officers for more authentic measures of a teacher's readiness.

Some believe that implementation has been rushed. New York's Board of Regents voted Tuesday to let student teachers who fail what's known as the edTPA test before the end of June 2015 to be certified using a separate test.

The edTPA test was created by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, working with the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity, or SCALE.
