No Murder Charges Filed in Party Bus Death

Posted: Updated:

Will there be justice for CJ ?

I spoke via skype with a grieving parent tonight. Though his 24-year-old son CJ died back in September, Chris Saraceno of Watertown CT is still grieving and still hoping for ''justice for my son''.  He didn't get it today when the LA County District Attorney's office declined the CHP's recommendation to to file criminal charges against the owner of ""Platinum Style Limo"" of North Hollywood.  To back up, CJ was a passenger in one of those rented ''party buses'' back in September of last year when he somehow stumbled into the door, which just opened, tumbling him out onto the freeway where he died a horrible death, being hit by numerous cars following behind the bus.

Turns out the CHP had ordered that bus off the road earlier, due to some safety violations, but the owner, according to the CHP, didn't comply.  (He disputes this through his attorney) The defective door was apparently not one of those problems, but it surfaced in a post crash investigation.  The D.A. though , decided that since no one had prior knowledge of the defective door mechanism, they were able to prove the negligence required to file a criminal charge, even ''vehicular manslaughter'', never mind murder which is what the CHP recommended.  The D.A. did, however, forward the case to the City Attorney which will consider misdemeanor charges.  Chris Saraceno said ''that means my son is worth a parking ticket .'' Not necessarily true, but I get his point. He's hoping publicity from the case will make people check into the rental companies they're using, particularly as we're in party and prom and graduation season so '' no other parent gets that 5 a.m. phone call saying they've lost a child.  It's devastating''.  Amen to that.
