New York Man Helps The Homeless By Collecting Cans

Posted: Updated:
Pittsford, N.Y.-One man in Pittsford, New York, has a big heart and a lot of cans in his garage.

Pete Requa started picking up cans and bottles 5 years ago.

It started as an attempt to clean up his community, but became much more than that.

All those cans add up at recycling plants, and he was able to pay for dog beds at an animal shelter.

So far, Requa has collected 40,000 cans, which equals $2,000.

"A lot of neighbors and people that are interested in the projects I've been working on are contributing and bag their cans for me, especially," Requa said. "Well, I have to give credit to Stacey and Ashley [local reporters] for that I was watching TV and they were featuring that as a lead into the homeless situation in Rochester, and I just happen to have the money from the cans I've been collecting."

Requa says that he was in shock to hear that families were living in their cars, so he decided to do something about it. He stresses the importance of helping others in need.

He plans on collecting even more cans, and is encouraging more people around Rochester to give back, too.
