New Douglas D.A. Fires Veteran Office Staffers

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. - Brand new Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner didn't take long to clear the air and clear the decks. On his second day on the job, Fortner fired office manager Tammie Agan and three others.

A FOX 5 I-Team investigation showed you how former D.A. David McDade used seized drug money to provide perks, high-paying second jobs and internships for Agan and her family.

Statement from Fired Douglas county employee Cindy Foran, as issued by her attorney Bill Atkins:

"Cindy Foran has lived under a cloud of suspicion for more than a year. She has fully cooperated with the GBI at every state of its investigation. She has remained quiet and continued to work tirelessly on behalf of the citizens of Douglas County. After Mr. Fortner's statements yesterday, Ms. Foran has authorized me to make a statement on her behalf.

During the course of the investigation, we have remained in contact with the AG's office. At this time, we have no reason to believe that the AG's intends to take any course of action against Ms. Foran. In the unlikely event that they do so, we will fight those charges and prove Ms. Foran's innocence.

On Friday, Mr. Fortner made the decision to terminate Ms. Foran, an honest and loyal employee who worked directly for Mr. Fortner when he was just a young district attorney. That is his prerogative. But his decision and subsequent statements leave a cloud of suspicion over Ms. Foran. That cloud should not exist and Mr. Fortner should have said so explicitly. After 20 years of dedicated service to the citizens of this county, she deserved better. "

Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
