NY's science, math scholarships are available

Joshua Goldberg is a senior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School on the Upper East Side. He plans to attend Binghamton University in the fall. He recently found out about the state's new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Incentive Program and decided to apply. His goal is to go to college for free.

"I have this interest in science, possibly neuroscience. And for me i think that being able to have this scholarship would be an opportunity to pursue this interest a little further," Joshua said. "Money is the biggest thing these and with families trying to figure out the cost college I think having a full tuition would be amazing."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the STEM Incentive Program in his state of the state address in January. Just this week his office released the details. The state will pay students a full scholarship to a CUNY or SUNY college if they are in the top 10 percent of their senior class, commit to one of the approved majors, and agree to work in one of those fields for five years in New York State after graduation.

Michael Turner from the state's higher education services corporation said it is a way to get some of New York's smartest students to stay in the state.

"Of course In New York we want the students to stay here," Turner said. "So attend our state universities, our city universities, utilize the scholarship and then give back to New York by staying and working here after they graduate."

"I think this is definitely one of the strongest scholarships I've seen and I think august is when I'll find out which could be great for me I'll find out," Joshua said.

Fingers crossed for josh. We're hoping he hears good news some soon.

And it's not too late. Officials say that students can still apply for this program through august 15 of this year.

    Two thugs were caught on security camera footage beating a teenager and stealing from her inside an apartment building in the Midwood section of Brooklyn.  The NYPD says the attackers are seen dragging the 18-year-old out of an elevator into the hallway and punching and kicking her.
    Police have arrested one of two suspects wanted in the brutal attack of a teenager inside her apartment building in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. The thugs were caught on security camera footage beating the 18-year-old at about 9:34 on Sunday night. The attackers are seen dragging the girl out of an elevator into the hallway and punching and kicking her. Tyler Hopping, 18, was arrested on Wednesday.
