A Runner’s Delight

Posted: Updated:

It's not every day you meet a man who can run faster and longer than most! I've been running for 20 years so shaking hands with Boston Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi was a complete honor. The foreign-born Keflezighi flew across the finish line in 2:08:37 back on April 21st, just days before his 39th birthday. That’s an incredible pace of 4 minute, 55 second miles!!! Remarkable, too, Keflezighi became the first American to win the iconic Boston Marathon in 31 years.

Keflezighi was born in Eritrea, just north of Ethiopia, but his parents immigrated to the United States when he was 12 years old. He proudly graduated from UCLA (as he said this morning on Good Day LA "Go Bruins!”), but he grew up in San Diego, where he accidentally discovered he’s a gifted runner.

He was a teenager when he ran his first mile in P.E. Knowing his father hoped he’d achieve an “A” in all classes, Keflezighi took everything seriously, including that inaugural mile. He ran those 5,280 feet in just 5 minutes, 20 seconds. Clearly, he was born to run and, all these years later, he’ll be recognized by the city that cultivated his love for the sport.

This Saturday, May 10th, Keflezighi will be honored at San Diego High School by Mayor, Kevin Faulconer. Those who attend what’s being dubbed “Meb Keflezighi Day” will get a chance to walk the track with him and maybe even check out the Skechers sneaks that helped carry him all those miles. (Yes, he’s sponsored by Skechers).

We haven’t seen the last of Keflezighi. He says he’s hoping to make his fourth Olympic team in 2016. (In 2004, he took home the silver). No doubt, he’ll spend the next several months vigilantly training, but I hope he takes the time to kick off those shoes, relax his feet, and relish his most recent accomplishment. #RunMebRun
