Detroit reforestation project needs volunteers

Posted: Updated:
Detroit (MyFoxDetroit) - One of the most expansive tree plantings in the region will take place 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17th as Hantz Woodlands kicks off one of the largest reforestation projects in the nation on Detroit's East Side.

Volunteers, businesses, neighborhood groups and other organizations have signed on teams of people to plant at least 30 trees per person on a collection of lots off Mack Avenue. Holes will be pre-dug and prepared for planting. Volunteers will only have to put the tree in the hole and cover it with dirt.

Sign up to participate on opening planting day is available on the Hantz Woodlands website.

"We're thrilled to be putting trees in the ground and advancing our vision to make a more beautiful and healthy Detroit," said Hantz Woodlands President Mike Score. "We're also excited to see groups from all over metro Detroit rolling up their sleeves and helping to put as many trees in the ground as possible.

"This project was always about figuring out a way to provide a new vision for what's possible in Detroit's neighborhoods," Score said. "And we've been tremendously motivated and gratified by the number of people who want to work with us to help realize that vision."

Planting will begin at 10 a.m. and go until 15,000 trees are planted. Participants are asked to bring shovels, as equipment is limited. Hantz Farms will provide volunteers with complimentary food and beverages on site.

Hantz Woodlands, a subsidiary of Hantz Farms LLC, is transforming more than 140 blighted acres on Detroit's east side into a beautiful and expansive hardwood tree farm with 15,000 trees. The group received final approval from Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr and Governor Rick Snyder last October to purchase more than 1,500 lots from the city and dig in on its plan.
