Non-Profit Medical Marijuana Dispensary Says It Having A Hard Time Finding Organization To Sponsor

Posted: Updated:

Here’s an interesting problem, non-profits have money to give to charity but they're having a hard time finding an organization willing to take their money.

Some valley marijuana dispensaries are saying it is happening to them because some don't want pot money.

FOX's Ty Brennan explains.

Cindy Abbott is the owner of the holistic center in Phoenix, a non-profit medical marijuana dispensary.

They've been open since October but have found one piece of operating their business tricky donating money to organizations.

"Some people are still kind of afraid to take money to associate themselves with a medical marijuana association, which is interesting."Abott said.

Many dispensaries in Arizona operate as non-profits meaning, at the end of the year any leftover money has to be donated in order to keep their non-profit status. Dispensary owners say despite strict state regulations there is still a stigma surrounding pot.

"As long as we're a schedule one drug, people are horrified to deal with it and it's unfortunate and we're hoping that will change soon," Abott said.

Abbott helped organize a huge fundraiser for MS last month and raised $6000.

She's hoping other organizations see the benefit in what they're doing -- and will be more willing to join forces.

"We'll keep going, we'll keep chugging along and talking to different organizations hoping that we can help them we'll see... it's a constant moving forward challenge, but in the long run I think it will be ok," Abott said.
