NJ lawmakers consider repealing smart gun law

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

The gun debate is firing up again in New Jersey. State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg is offering to repeal a gun law she sponsored 12 years ago if the National Rifle Association agrees to stop its opposition to smart guns.

A smart gun is a high-tech weapon that uses technology so that it will only work when the owner -- not somebody else -- is firing it.

The New Jersey gun law passed 12 years ago only goes into effect if smart gun is sold anywhere in the United States. So far, smart guns are still in development. None have been sold for use.

Weinberg, a gun safety advocate, is now saying she will work to repeal the old state law if the NRA backs off its tough stance against smart guns.

Anthony Colandro, owner of the Gun for Hire Range in Woodland Park, is glad because even though there are no sales of smart guns yet he doesn't have to convert or get rid of his weapons. But he worries about the future.

So far, the NRA is not backing down on its opposition to smart guns.
