Southfield police fire at suspected car thief in traffic

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - The evening commute was brought to an abrupt halt when Southfield Police opened fire on a suspected car thief.

The incident happened on Nine Mile Road near Greenfield Road.

FOX 2 video journalist Chris Sherban witnessed the incident moments after leaving the FOX 2 studio.

He first noticed several police vehicles had a Lincoln Aviator surrounded. We're told the driver had just stolen the SUV.

"The car tried to get away and it was already blocked in by two other cars, two other police cars. And I think it hit one because I saw it jerk like it hit something. And then, all of a sudden, just one officer, specifically, fired four or five shots off," says Sherban.

The bullets struck the vehicle in the window, driver's side door, grill, tire and front fender. The suspect was struck in the shoulder. Police were able to take him into custody.

Emergency crews tended to his injury and he was taken to nearby Providence Hospital. We've been told he was treated and has been released into police custody.

It is unknown at this time if the suspect was armed.

The incident is still under investigation.
