New general manager chosen for Atlanta airport

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has appointed Miguel Southwell to serve as general manager for the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

City officials said in a statement Monday that Southwell, who has served as the airport's interim general manager since January, was a finalist for the position when Louis Miller was appointed to the post during Reed's first term.

Officials say Southwell was previously deputy director of business retention and development at the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and worked there for 12 years.

Reed says Southwell's experience in Miami and Atlanta makes him the right person to assume leadership of the airport.

Part of Southwell's new role will include leading a development plan through year 2030. Reed says he hopes to make the airport and Atlanta the logistics hub of the western hemisphere.
