US 41 reopens after floodwaters close roadway Monday night

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Heavy rains in the northern part of Illinois Monday night transformed streets into rivers. Hundreds of truck drivers and commuters were left stranded along Route 41. The roadway did not reopen until Wednesday morning.

In North Chicago, flooded roads swamped cars and trucks in several spots. The flooding also caused problems for several businesses.

In the northern suburbs, Route 41 was closed between Route 137 and Deerpath Road in Lake Bluff because of run-off flooding. The water in the area reached 14 feet and 2 inches.

One truck driver told FOX 32's Darlene Hill he was stranded in the roadway since 8 p.m. Monday night.

"They let us know about 11 p.m. that we were not going anywhere, so we might as well lie down and sleep," he said.

There is no word on when the stranded drivers will be told they can leave the roadway. Officials say the flooding happens about once or twice a year because of the plumbing and structure in the area.

All schools in Lake Bluff were closed Tuesday due to the flooding at the viaduct.

During Monday’s heavy rainfall periods – between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. – certain areas in the warning area saw more than one inch of rain fall an hour, the Sun Times Media Wire reports.

North suburban Libertyville was hit with 2.8 inches of rain Monday, while northwest suburban Woodstock saw 2.5 inches of rainfall, according to the weather service. O’Hare International Airport recorded 1.3 inches of rain.

Wednesday morning, US 41 reopened to traffic.
