Why babies and dogs should wear sunglasses too

Posted: Updated:
Sunglasses are the best way to protect your eyes from the sun's most damaging rays. Dr. Rishi Singh, an opthamaolgist from the Cleveland Clinic, recommends that even babies should be wearing sunglasses.

There is no shortage of dogs and babies wearing sunglasses on the Internet, but beyond making a silly statement these sunglasses are seriously important.

The Vision Council of America reminds us that the damage from UVA and UVB radiation is cumulative over a person's lifetime, so it's a good idea to teach your children the importance of wearing sunglasses.

Just make sure you're buying quality protection. "The best way to do it is to buy sunglasses that are UVA and UVB blocking sunglasses. There are a bunch out there. You want to buy them from a reputable manufacturer," says Dr. Singh.

Low quality sunglasses do more harm than good because they cause the pupil to dilate letting more dangerous rays in. You should look for a label that says blocks 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. Glasses that meet ANSI requirements are a good sign too. If you child won't wear sunglasses go for a hat or visor.

When it comes to dogs, some veterinarians often recommend "doggles" which are sunglasses made for dogs, saying they will protect them from UV rays, wind or debris.
