Going For The Gold & Green With Venus Williams

Posted: Updated:
She’s one of the most famous athletes in the world, a four-time Olympic gold medalist and seven-time Grand Slam title winner, including five Wimbledon championships. But did you know that Venus Williams is an avid green juicer and French fry aficionado? Yes, it’s true! The tennis superstar was recently in Santa Monica for the 4th annual Jamba Juice FiTrends Expo at the Annenberg Community Beach House where folks were invited to learn (and participate in) this year’s hottest fitness trends while sampling Jamba Juice's new all-natural fruit and veggie smoothies. Admittedly, I didn't do any of the workouts, but I did catch up with Venus to dish on her secrets for success both on and off the court.

Mar: Hi Venus! OMG your arms are so fit. Obviously you stay in shape, but let’s get to the good, or should I say, bad, stuff. Do you have any food weaknesses?

Venus: I don’t believe in diets. I try to eat healthy most of the time. I eat fun foods sometimes, too, but not very often.

How does Jamba Juice help you with that situation?

You know, it’s just a balance and for me juicing is definitely a lifestyle. Whenever I’m in the US, I juice at Jamba Juice. When I’m overseas, I bring a blender.

No way. You take an actual blender with you overseas?

Yes, I take a blender.

What do you juice?

If I’m blending on the road, it’s what I can find. It might be kale or cucumber or whatever I can throw in…

Always something green?

Yeah, it always looks green. Tastes good but it looks green. Green is good.

Did you come up with any of the flavor combinations for the new Jamba Juice veggie smoothies?

I haven’t come up with any of the flavors … I have some ideas but they haven’t come up in stores yet. But maybe one day they will!

You mentioned fun foods earlier. What are some of your fun foods?

Oh, I loooove French fries.

Is there a particular place where you love the French fries?

Not necessarily. I’m an equal opportunity fry lover! My thing for the last year has been French fries, I don’t know why.

So not sweets? You’re not a chocolate fiend?

No, I’m not a chocolate fiend. I do like sour candy. I think with fruit you can kind of replace that sour taste, so that helps me a lot.

You’re constantly training and playing tennis. Are there certain workouts that you always do?

Oh yeah. I’m in the gym all the time … running, jumping, biking, lifting, stretching, Pilates, everything. That’s my whole life and lifestyle--fitness and working out.

And is that fun for you?

It’s work, but I enjoy the results. I love being prepared. Sometimes you get in the gym and you’re on a roll and you don’t stop. And then there are some days when you’re like, ugh, and keep looking at the clock or looking at the list of exercises and wondering when am I gonna get done? So it’s a balance, I think.

You’ve won four Olympic gold medals and about a million Grand Slams. Does the feeling ever get old?

No. Losing always gets old, but winning never does! Let’s put it this way: Losing the first time is old already. [Laughs]

You were born in Lynwood and raised in Compton. You came from such humble beginnings and now you’ve traveled all around the world and have this incredible career. Did you ever dream as a little girl that your life would be like this?

Well, I think as a little girl I loved the game, I loved tennis, and I wanted to go out there and win the big ones. And you put the work in behind it and with some blessing and some luck and doing the right thing you get there.

What’s your advice for those who want to make their dreams come true, whether it’s being a star athlete or a musician or a doctor? What can help propel them forward and break through any barriers?

Be careful of who you surround yourself with because those are the people who will either build you up or tear you down. Be around people who are moving forward, not staying in the same place, who are looking to the future, not just looking in the moment. And just be focused on the decisions you make and how it affects you in five minutes or five days or five years. So with every decision you make, think about that.

How do you stay motivated? Don’t you ever have moments when you just want to do nothing … or is that just me?!

[Laughs.] Everybody wants to do nothing sometimes. If you don’t, it’s not normal. For me, I love being busy. I love seeing things being created and grow. So whether you’re working on the court and creating a better game and see it culminate into a championship, whether it’s building a business or learning something new or helping other people, whatever it is, I enjoy that process of seeing something start really small and grow big--that’s what motivates me.

Making right decisions about your diet and fitness, would you say it all starts there?

Yeah, without your health you can’t live a normal life. The quality of your life goes down. What you put in your body not only helps you to look your best but it gives you longevity.

What’s next on the horizon? You have a clothing line, don’t you?

Yeah, my clothing line is called EleVen by Venus, so we always have a new season coming out, new prints. It’s active wear and I love it. I’m traveling abroad for the next championships, so lots of things on the horizon!

Thank you, Venus. Great meeting you. Congrats on all your success!

Thanks, you too!
