At the one in front of Rodger’s apartment complex Autumn LaTour remembers how her sister Lauren was almost in the wrong place at the wrong time. “She was walking on the street that he was shooting at two minutes before he started shooting.” Lauren has an uncomfortable look as her sister shares the story. The twins both go to UCSB. Their mom, Diane Miceli, came up from LA because the girls were distraught. Miceli taught Rodger at an LA continuing education school because, according to her, “He was bullied, I believe, at his other schools. They bullied him. He had food thrown at him during lunchtime. So, this was kind of the last school on the block for him.”
I asked her if she saw Rodger’s YouTube videos and if the Elliot Rodger in those was the same kid she knew when she was teaching him. “No … no,” she said. “He never would have talked that much. I never knew he had that kind of vocabulary.” And, she says he never displayed anger toward women.
An extra somber Memorial Day in Isla Vista. A weekend usually filled with parties and BBQs, is tainted with shock and sadness.
Make-shift memorials can be seen throughout the college town, quite a contrast to see sunflowers on a gloomy day in a devastated community.
The pops of gunfire still ring in the ears of students here who witnessed friday's massacre.
Many ducked for cover inside Pizza My Heart pizza parlor, as the moment of terror was all caught on surveillance video.
The mourning continues for the 6 innocent lives taken by shooter 22 year old Elliot Rodger. Others were injured in the rampage, some struck by his black BMW .
One witness said, "I saw him hit a bicyclist and the guy flew onto his windshield and was thrown four houses away."
The killing spree started at Rodger's apartment where he stabbed three of people to death, two of them his roommates. They've been identified as 20 year olds Weihan Wang, Chen Yuan Hong and 19 year old George Chen.
Students paid tribute to the lives lost in a prayer service sunday night, and candles and flowers mark the ten different locations of Rodger's drive by shooting spree.
Law enforcement continue to pour over all the evidence in this case but have cleared each crime scene remarkably fast. Possibly an indication of the community trying to gain some sort of normalcy and begin to heal.
