Move it or lose it: New study finds simple activity helps older adults

A new study finds that simple physical activities could have a major impact on older adults maintaining their independence.

"I guess I was a kind of couch potato beforehand," says Mildred Johnston who was one of the participants in the study. She says that out of all of her friends that she is the only one without a cane.

Doctors recently studied 1,600 patients ages 70 - 89 who are all at high risk at being unable to walk. For more than two years one group was put on a structured physical activity program.

Dr. Marco Pahor says, "We didn't require any special equipment to perform this program so that it could be applied anywhere in any environment."

The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that patients doing the physical activity saw an almost 20 percent reduction in their mobility risk.

The group believes staying active is good for the body and mind.
"It's given me more purpose. I'm doing a lot of things I didn't do four years ago," said Brian Ainsworth, who was also a participant.

Doctors remind activity in your 70s or 80s can mean taking special precautions because of balance, bone strength or safety issues.
