Man arrested after Sandy Springs synagogue threats

Posted: Updated:
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - A man who Sandy Springs police say has been harassing members of a local synagogue was arrested on Friday afternoon.

Charles Cortell was arrested following a traffic stop and charged with three county of disorderly conduct. He is currently being held at the Alpharetta Jail.

According to police, Charles Cortell has showed up to Congregation Beth Tefillah in person, made phone calls, left voice-mails and sent suspicious emails and more.

Authorities say Cortell is homeless and was believed to be living out of his white BMW. Police think he may be bipolar or schizophrenic.

Cortell is Jewish, but his messages are hateful towards Jewish people. He also expressed paranoia about certain political and governmental facets.

The Sandy Springs Police Department isn’t sure why Cortell is targeting this specific synagogue and no others.
