So Cal Softball Team To Compete In Special Olympics

Posted: Updated:

It took years of training and a lot of hard fought victories but softball players from Southern California have realized their dream. They are headed to the Special Olympics USA Games. Players of the team Giant Steps Warriors are gearing up for an experience of a lifetime.

In June, these athletes will be playing the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games. Coach Edward Cartwright says the Special Olympics are about sportsmanship and having the courage to give it all you've got even when you're struggling. He tells his players, "If you can't hit the ball, you have to keep trying until you fire one off and then the next time at bat, you hit it and you RUN!" On the field, there is one mom keeping a close eye on the players.

She is Valerie Brisco, a 1984 three time Gold Medalist. Her son Alvin Hooks is going to the Special Olympics. She says, "Oh, it's so exciting to be able to compete for your country and to see him out there competing and going to the Olympics, it's a really, really special thing."

The USA Games will be hosted by New Jersey. Three thousand five hundred athletes will be competing. Giant Steps Warriors will have their first game on June 16, 2014. One day after the opening ceremonies. Depending on how they play, they could have up to five games. We certainly wish them the best of luck!
