Study: Carb, not gluten, may be to blame for many digestive issues

Gluten-free diets are a huge trend. But a new study finds a lot of people may not actually be allergic to this protein found in the grains wheat, barley, oats, and rye. Instead, researchers are now pointing the finger at a type of carbohydrate found in other foods we regularly eat.

The carb is called fructan, which, along with other FODMAPs, can irritate your digestive tract and cause gas, diarrhea, distention, and more, according to gastroenterologists.

FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-di-monosaccharides and polyols) are certain kinds of carbs found in foods. These include Fructose, Lactose, Fructans, Galactans, legumes, and Polyols, according to Stanford University Medical Center's Digestive Health Center.

Stanford has released a short set of guidelines and list of foods to avoid if people have irritable bowel syndrome or other digestive disorders: The Low FODMAP Diet (PDF download).
