Neighbors want downed tree tangled in power lines to finally be removed

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - "We live here so we want our neighborhood to look nice; we are proud of Detroit," says Penndora Willia. But she is not proud of or happy that she has been looking at a downed tree in her yard for months.

The tree is on her utility lines in her backyard at her home on Lakewood. Back in September it fell from one of the city's vacant lots during a big storm.

"I've called the mayor's office; I've called the forestry department; I've called the ombudsman's office; I've called everyone except for the chief of police to try to do something about this tree," she tells FOX 2's Amy Lange.

Willis says DTE has been out and said it's not on their lines.

In October someone from the forestry department came out to see the tree and said it was a priority for the city - but that was months ago.

"No one cares. 'Okay we're going to get it.' 'Oh, we had a bad winter.' 'Okay, we're sorry, we'll be out there as soon as the weather breaks.' The weather has broke! It's over - it's summer! Let's get this tree out of the way. It should have been removed," she says.

Willis was hoping to use her backyard this summer but doesn't want her grand kids anywhere near this.

"They can't play basketball, they can't enjoy because the lines are down. We don't know much voltage is running through those lines. We don't know; it's on the ground, actually," she says.

Willis says normally she'd be using a storage bin for her patio cushions but, as you can see in the video, a line is sitting on it that she doesn't even want to touch.

FOX 2 contacted the city and they sent a crew out to look at it right away, and say a contractor should be out next week.

It's one of five thousand city-owned trees that need to come down and the city is asking the emergency manager for two million dollars to take down three thousand of them.

As for this one, neighbors say they've waited long enough.

"It's been long enough. Eight months is long enough. Well overdue," says Donta Bivens.

"Just cut the tree. That's all we ask. We don't want much. Just cut the tree, please," Willis says.
