Bid for historic Detroit home sets auction record, website crashes

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - The city's online home auction set a new record Friday. The Detroit Land Bank Authority says the auction website even crashed after bids on a historic mini-mansion came pouring in. The bid for the home in the Boston Edison District rang in at $135,000, breaking a record.

The Land Bank released this statement:

"Due to overwhelming interest in today's auctioned properties, our website crashed near the end of the auction and several bidders were unable to submit their final bids for the property at 115 Chicago Boulevard. At the time the website went down shortly after 5:30 p.m., bids were up to $135,000 - a new high for our auction. To be fair to all, we will offer that property again on June 6th, after increasing the website's capacity. We have spoken with the two final bidders who, despite being disappointed, indicate they both plan to bid again on June 6th."

According to the auction's website, the previous highest bid for a home in the auction was for $87,100.

"It is what I expected; there's a huge demand for people to want to move into the good neighborhoods in Detroit. We've got six thousand registered bidders and we're just going to keep selling these houses and moving families back in," says Mayor Mike Duggan.

Saturday, May 31, an open house of Detroit Land Bank homes will be in the Morningside neighborhood. On Sunday, June 1, an open house will take place in the East English Village neighborhood.

About two dozen homes will be open for potential bidders to walk through in person. The open house runs from 1 - 5 p.m. both days.
