Why Vote? Why Bother? Why Not! Election Day is Tuesday!

Posted: Updated:

Voter turnout is expected to be low for Tuesday's primary. Still, I can't not vote. Yes, working in news makes it almost mandatory for me to vote. I know the issues, report on the races, meet candidates out in the community, and do events with many of the elected officials. I'd be a hypocrite if I went on the news reminding viewers to vote then sat home watching re-runs of The Housewives of Beverly Hills, but my reason for embracing the electoral process goes beyond the obvious.

Growing up, as a child, my father was a voter registrar. A sign hung in the window of our middle-America home. It read something like "Register To Vote Here." I remember strange adults coming to our home, popping into dad's office. I didn't comprehend what was going on but it all felt important. My father, Jack Devine, had married my mother and adopted me. Before that, he'd worked in the Peace Corps as a teacher in a remote village of Tanzania. He understood the power of the political process and embraced America's democracy.

My mother has an equally encouraging story. She was in medical aid, a nurse of sorts, in the slums of Brazil. She too was in the Peace Corps and while there witnessed a peaceful coup. She tells me of how all the Americans were told to go to a safe place in the city of Rio. As a non-violent takeover she says it all began and ended without incident and she returned to her tiny impoverished hillside home. Again, much appreciation for the right to vote!

My parents never told me to vote. It was a philosophy engrained in me as a child. Much like paying taxes or even pumping gas into the car. It was routine and just what we did. It was the all-American way and my parents did not take it for granted.

Primary election day is Tuesday June 3rd. Among the questions, who will lead the votes for Sheriff? One of the insiders, an outside law enforcement veteran, a former undersheriff who left under scrutiny? Who will lead the race for LA County Supervisor District 3? A Kennedy, a child actress turned politician, a West Hollywood city councilman? Will voters put a spiritual guru into office? Or an activist who took fire from Rush Limbaugh? Do we want an education reformer or the equally qualified incumbent? If you love or hate Governor Jerry Brown's high speed rail is that not reason enough to vote?

I can't wait to sport my "I Voted" sticker tomorrow!
