Proposal to decriminalize marijuana in Oak Park to appear on August ballot

Posted: Updated:
OAK PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -- A judge ruled that a proposal to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana will appear on the August ballot in Oak Park.

If adopted, the proposal would stop the city from enforcing civil and criminal punishment for adults who possess or transport less than an ounce of marijuana on private property, for personal use.

Last year, voters in Ferndale, Jackson, and Lansing approved similar proposals.

State and federal law still says marijuana is illegal.

The proposal will appear on the August 5 ballot as follows:

AMEND THE HOME RULE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF OAK PARK BY ADDING A NEW SECTION TO CHAPTER 8.

Shall Chapter 8 of the Charter of Oak Park be amended to add a new Section 8. 15, entitled "Marijuana." to state that: "Nothing in the Code of Ordinances shall apply to     use, possession or transfer of less than 1 ounce of marijuana, on private property not used by the public, or transportation of less than 1 ounce of marijuana, by a person     who has attained the age of 21 years"?
